Biotope Environnement

Our services

Fauna and flora expertise

Biotope Environnement’s experts have the necessary skills to collect and process field data in order to carry out naturalist inventories. For this, we have developed methods for identifying species (birds, bats, insects, plants, etc.) and habitats, and also innovative data processing methods.

We work with the various administrations in order to approve and advance the robustness of the inventory methods.

Ecological engineering and environmental assessment

We take the natural environment aspect into account throught different stages of a development project, from its design to its dismantling, for projects such as: real estate projects, roads and motorways, railways, mines and quarries, energy production and transport projects, etc.

The aim is to take biodiversity and landscape integration into account as much as possible while carrying out this development, among other things, when assessing the impact of the project.

Our main approach is based on the “Avoid/Reduce/Compensate” sequence. In addition, concrete, efficient and innovative solutions are proposed to reconcile development projects with the natural environment.

Biodiversity conservation and management

Biotope Environnement is involved during all stages of a conservation project, such as the establishment of nature reserves and the management of Natura 2000 sites through the development of management, restoration and conservation plans for threatened species.

On a protected area network scale, the study of the ecosystems ecological functionality is a response to an environmental policy with a broader ambition.

Cartography – geomatics – Web mapping

The detailed representation of territories is absolutely essential to visualise biodiversity issues. This is why Biotope Environnement has the skills and computer tools required to produce these cartographic representation.

Agroecology

Biotope Environnement is involved in ambitious projects seeking to develop agricultural practices adapted to current environmental challenges such as water management, climate change and the preservation of biodiversity.
We work closely with various stakeholders in the agricultural sector including farmers, public authorities and environmental organisations. Our approach is based on functional biodiversity and farm sustainability assessment, raising awareness on these crucial issues within the agricultural sector, and facilitating a return to healthy ecosystems. Using an integrated, scientific approach, we help implement sustainable agricultural practices that support biodiversity while improving the resilience of farming systems.

Forest inventory and management in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg

To ensure that the Grand Duchy’s forests are managed in an ecologically, socially and economically sustainable way, Biotope Environnement Luxembourg is working with the Nature and Forest Agency. In this capacity, we carry out detailed forest inventories, an essential step in the design of forest management plans.
These management documents are essential for responsible forest management and must be updated every ten years for each forest estate managed by the State. To do this, we put our expertise and know-how to good use by carrying out dendrometric and physical measurements in order to provide a detailed description of each forest stand.
Drawing on our experience in the field, we draw up thematic maps and management guidelines, providing invaluable tools for sustainable and efficient forest management.

Tropical forest management

Our team supports public and private sector players, as well as civil society in the responsible and sustainable management and enhancement of natural resources and tropical forests. Our expertise covers all aspects of those projects, from the planning, conduct and quality control of forest and biodiversity inventories to the use, analysis and presentation of the data they generate.

We draft regulatory studies, management plans and annual operations plans that comply with the requirements of regulatory frameworks and advise our clients on how to achieve the level of forest management and traceability required by the most stringent certification standards, such as FSC, PEFC and Legalsource.

Our mission is to optimally integrate global social, environmental and biodiversity issues into each of our forestry projects.

Aquatic environments

As an environmental consultancy, Biotope Environnement is also involved in your projects around aquatic environments, both in Belgium and in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. We carry out renaturation studies, projects to restore ecological continuity and biological inventories and diagnoses of ponds and watercourses.

Thanks to our naturalist field expertise and tried-and-tested ecological analysis methodologies, we offer comprehensive, robust studies of the biodiversity of aquatic environments. We also assess the ecological state of habitats using bioindicators.

Geomatics and ecological continuity

Biotope Environnement has expertise in geomatics and ecological network analysis. We combine the use of geospatial data visualisation tools (naturalist and environmental) with various analysis tools such as:
– species distribution models (SDM);
– spatial statistics;
– characterisation of ecological networks.
Our expertise enables us to collect and interpret complex geospatial data in order to identify and characterise features that are unfavourable to the movement of species. We also provide recommendations for preserving and strengthening the ecological continuities (mobility corridors and habitat reservoirs) essential to biodiversity. These recommendations can also be delivered in the form of an action plan to meet specific needs.
Finally, our analyses also assess the impact of landscape modifications such as the restoration or creation of natural areas favourable to flora and fauna. We also propose solutions to make existing or planned human infrastructures more permeable to wildlife, in particular by installing wildlife crossings adapted to local species.

Environmental certification of your project – Biodivercity® et BREEAM®

What role can biodiversity play in towns and cities in a context of increasing urbanisation?
Our experts can help you carry out studies and advise you on the ecological management of your urban development projects, within the framework of international environmental certifications:
– BREEAM® (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method);
– BiodiverCity® (CIBI).
This includes carrying out inital on-site flora and fauna surveys and analysing the potential impact of the work. If an impact on biodiversity is unavoidable, our experts propose compensatory measures, which will be regularly monitored to assess their effectiveness.
In short, we help you integrate biodiversity into all phases of your project, ensuring that construction not only minimizes its negative impact but also actively contributes to the conservation and enhancement of local biodiversity.
